After a particularly dull September, Cinemas are set to brim with life again as two Hollywood releases and a local title are set to release across cinemas in Pakistan, this week.
First up is “Joker”. This is the film everybody has been talking about. Not your typical superhero film, “Joker” is a one-off supervillain film about the origins of the character. The film doesn’t derive from any comic book, but takes a much more realistic look at the society that could produce such a villain. The film has been mired in controversy as of late for ostensibly portraying the villain as sympathetic. Still, the film has been showered with praise by critics, and has even won the prestigious Golden Bear Prize for ‘Best Film’ at the Venice Film Festival.
Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix (Gladiator), Zazzie Beetz (Deadpool 2) and Robert De Niro (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, etc.). It hits theaters Friday, October 4th.
Second is “Daal Chaawal”, a local release starring Salman Shahid and Shafqat Cheema. The plot revolves around a young graduate, played by Awais Khalid, who is struggling to find a job. He is surrounded by corrupt politicians, goons and terrorists. Playing the leading role opposite him is Momina Iqbal. Both are making their debut in the film which pays tribute to the fallen martyrs that have sacrificed their lives battling societal evils that have plagued Pakistan for so long.
Definitely go see this one. It hits theaters Friday, October 4th.
Metallica & San Francisco Symphony:
The last new release is an unconventional one for Pakistan. “Metallica and San Francisco Symphony” or “S&M2” is a sequel to the 1999 live performance musical from the band. While unfamiliar to most audiences in Pakistan, this is an experimental filmmaking technique which puts an entire album to film. Similar films have included “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” and “Katy Perry: Part of Me”.
If you’re a Metallic diehard, you may want to book your tickets right now. S&M2 hits theaters Wednesday, October 9th.
